The Denver Nuggets Officially Start Rebuilding

It has been a long time coming. Rumors about the Cleveland Cavaliers’ interest in acquiring Timofey Mozgov began surfacing as early as this summer, and have rarely died down since. Initially, the Denver Nuggets’ stance was firm, resisting the urge to move Mozgov, as they steadfastly viewed him as a piece they could build around for their future. But, that was also when there was rampant optimism and genuine hope for a competitive season running throughout the front office.

That all officially ended today, as the Nuggets agreed to send Mozgov to the Cavaliers in return for two first-round picks, whom they had previously acquired from the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Memphis Grizzlies as part of separate trades. Those picks will almost certainly end up being late round selections, but given the recent emergence of Jusuf Nurkic, and the dire need to begin the rebuilding process in earnest, I’d say the Nuggets did about as well as could be expected, especially in light of this regime’s successful track record in the draft.

The Cavaliers don’t have to send any players to the Nuggets in return, since they had a $5.3 million trade exception they acquired as part of the Keith Bogans trade, and Mozgov’s salary will simply be absorbed. Many people will be critical of the fact that the Nuggets didn’t receive any players in return, but given how Mozgov has struggled as of late, getting two first round picks in return was a steal. Drafting well, opening up cap space while collecting assets, and making wise free agent acquisitions will be how this team rebuilds. This was only step one.

The most promising part of this deal to me, is the front office finally admitting, albeit it’s only implied at this point, that the best way forward is to enter a full-scale rebuild. My guess is that this won’t be the last move the Nuggets make prior to the deadline. Wilson Chandler has been part of several trade rumors. Arron Afflalo has a player option after this season, and could very well be shopped as well. And of course, if there is anyone foolish enough to take a chance on JaVale McGee, I’m sure the Nuggets would be more than willing to listen.

For the Cavaliers, this is an unexpected vote of confidence for David Blatt, as he has a history with coaching Mozgov on the Russian National team, and on its surface appears to be allowing him to have influence over personnel decisions. While, this still doesn’t make them favorites in the Eastern Conference, it should go a long way towards solidifying their interior defense.

I have long been a fan of Mozgov, his demeanor, and his role on this team, but this shouldn’t be a day of mourning for Nuggets fans. We finally have a reason to be optimistic about the future, and can rest assured there is an actual plan in place.

Oh, and don’t forget this also marks the official start of the Nurkic era, which in and of itself is reason to rejoice. It’s been a tough season so far, but don’t be afraid to let out a collective sigh of relief. To rebuild or not? The question has finally been answered.
